You Are Viewing a Legacy Page

You are viewing an old style generator. It still works, but has been replaced with a new generator which produces higher resolution maps and has a variety of improvements that make it better suited to both online play and use in print.

The Random Cave Map Creator

The original since 2004!

Caves being fairly random things a random cave map generator seems like a logical choice. Ours includes lots of funky randomisation effects, a choice of wall types and various backgrounds. We're sure you'll love it!

Comments

that this random dungeon and cave map creator is the best tool I have come across in a lifetime. One click and SOOooo powerful. That for whoever put the effort in the development.

Gee thanks Mike, nice to know someone appreciates my efforts.

Great tool!! This really helped my D&D game. Thanks!

Comment Posted Nov 25, 2005 at 05:17 by Garett

Cool... been looking for a random generator that isn\'t all blocky for a long time... suggestions: 1) More entrances option (up to like 4-5 say: for linking together maps) and 2) Editing-simple write and erase option to connect areas, simple modify in program. But still great: thanks for making it available!

This map generator is great!

Comment Posted Feb 1, 2006 at 11:14 by Defame

Man, this is AWESOME.Now all it takes is one click instead of hours to make a really cool cave map. Thanks for not only making such a great program but making it free.

Comment Posted Mar 7, 2006 at 18:51 by GenghisJon

awsome dude what would be really cool would be if you made more map generators because even if they are half as good as this one they would be great!

Comment Posted Jun 21, 2006 at 10:44 by kanik

This is a great tool for any campaign. Just one question, what does the \"density\" mean? I couldn\'t really tell the difference from lowest to highest. Thanks.

Comment Posted Jun 22, 2006 at 03:22 by Syrinx Xanadu

Love your tool. The old cave floor grid was much better for printouts. The new cave floor grids look clean, but aren\'t as visible. Thanks for making this tool available!

Comment Posted Jul 30, 2006 at 04:12 by Ken

Excellent tool, and thanks for providing it. I\'ve been too preoccupied to make some cave maps for my recent game and you just saved me heaps of time and effort.

Comment Posted Jul 30, 2006 at 15:00 by Steve

Hey, if you made the walls green and foilagey, it\'d be great for creating wilderness encounters! (Designating clear from densely forested terrain.)

Comment Posted Aug 2, 2006 at 16:27 by Tarl

Tarl, just wait till you see what I have in the works for wilderness encounters! I\'m developing a map creator for forested/wilderness locations that includes water features, ruins and so on. It\'s very much a work in progress at present but I\'m hoping to add it to my site by the end of August.

Comment Posted Aug 6, 2006 at 12:26 by Gozzy

hey gozzy, i would be extremely interested in a wilderness creator, could you PLEASE e-mil me at mr_mastadon_man@hotmail.com when it is finished??? this would be GREATLY apprechiated, THANKS!!!!!!!!!!

Comment Posted Aug 7, 2006 at 23:56 by BlueStreekHydro

oh, by the way, i was wondering what you used to creat these maps, because i would like to be able to add things like chests, beds, shelves, etc.....to the map, any way i could do this??????thanks

Comment Posted Aug 7, 2006 at 23:59 by BlueStreekHydro

Truely bloody awesome. I was half asleep when I agreed to help create around 18 square kilometers of cave systems for a game. This just saved my life. Thank you!

Comment Posted Aug 26, 2006 at 20:30 by Celti

Excellent tool, I\'ll definitely have use for it in the future. Keep on the good work ! (Oh, and a similar \"forest\" tool would rule, too).

Comment Posted Sep 24, 2006 at 21:35 by PaSquall

Great tool Gozzy, but murder on black ink cartridges. The other background colors don\'t give too good definition to the caverns imo, either. Any chance at some better background colors? Just some constructive criticism. ;)

Comment Posted Sep 28, 2006 at 03:08 by Varl

Aye, a great tool. I don\'t have a problem with the background as I\'ll just sellect white. That way I can write notes and trace the cavern walls/color them to as I see fit. As for floor, well I wouldn\'t mind there being a b/w grid instead of rock choices. I like to preserve the color in my cartridges and just a printing of the basics is fine with me. Perhaps the option to forgo floor patterns would work. Also, a selection of grid colors might be nice (black, blue-scale, gray, etc).

Comment Posted Sep 28, 2006 at 18:36 by McDeath

Good point McDeath. I missed the white option. That\'ll work! Great job again Gozzy.

Comment Posted Sep 30, 2006 at 04:16 by Varl

Nice work. Good use of technology. I'm not so found of randomized dungeon layouts (they offend my sensibilities since ostensibly someone built and paid for them, so randomness seems less appropos unless the builder was insane...), but random caves and wildernesses are very spiffy! And they *look nice* too. You've got some good elements (especially in the wilderness generator!). One nice mod would be to be able to specify how many horizontal and vertical divisions for the grid (or specify one and derive the other. This way a given cave layout could be 4 squares wide or 40.... this works less well with items which conjure scale, such as dungeons or forests with trees of semi-known size, but for caves, it would bea great feature. Caves could be of pretty much any size from "phone booth" to "Vault of the Drow".... Thanks again for your good work!

These generators are great - a real life-saver. Any idea when this Cave Generator will be back in action? It's terrific.

Comment Posted Mar 23, 2007 at 15:35 by Rochefort

For Zacky: "Hasta la vista" means "see you later" in spanish

Comment Posted Mar 30, 2007 at 10:14 by Cam

hello,all

Comment Posted Mar 30, 2007 at 12:41 by Unknown

All the other generators on this site are great. But what's happened to this one? Is it likely to get fixed? Help! Gozzy - where are you?

Comment Posted Apr 5, 2007 at 14:24 by Scrambler

I've finally fixed it. That was a bit of a pig to do and took some serious reworking of the graphical generation side of the code. All working now though!

Comment Posted Apr 8, 2007 at 16:25 by Gozzy

Great ! Keep on the good work !

Comment Posted Apr 8, 2007 at 22:49 by PaSquall

I really liked the Cave creator. Superb! Thanks a bunch!

Comment Posted Sep 20, 2007 at 19:54 by Viradu

Is it possible to include an option for the cave floor to be pure white, so they can be used as map templates in games?

Comment Posted Dec 28, 2007 at 19:26 by Anonymous

And without the dropshadow as well? Just two-tone black and white.

Comment Posted Dec 28, 2007 at 19:28 by Anonymous

First, thanks so much for sharing your work. It is appreciated. It's also incredibly awesome. I do have a request. I import maps into maptool at rptools.net. When I blowup the maps for the scale I need, they are fuzzy. I know it is your bandwidth, but is there anyway we could select a resolution for those of us who need higher resolution material? thanks redbeard Do you have a donate button someplace?

Great work, but I need a map way bigger than "Immense" like 20-50 times larger....any chance of that?

Comment Posted Jul 9, 2012 at 05:33 by Chance

I love this utility. It has made many games I play so much easier and fun. Thank you!

Comment Posted Aug 11, 2012 at 02:38 by Sean The Baldman

@Chance I know this might not be the cleverest solution, but perhaps generate several maps with multiple entries and just join the ends? Great tool by the way! I think I'm going to be using it extensively in future!

Comment Posted Aug 27, 2012 at 04:51 by Stoj

Thank you very much for your work

Comment Posted Oct 29, 2012 at 09:21 by palladynPL

Good job! Loving this! Three thumbs up from me ;) But i'd like a "tiny"-function - smaller than the small size! I'm printing maps with 8*11 squares per page, and a small map is just too big for those 1-encounter-maps :)

Comment Posted Nov 14, 2012 at 14:58 by Damodred

This has helped me a lot by providing me with heightmaps to create 3d dungeons and caves. This has saved me dozens of hours, thank you a lot. Now if I could find a similar program to generate random mountain ranges I would be a very happy man :P

Comment Posted Dec 26, 2012 at 00:30 by Riley

Could you possibly allow me to copy the source code for the generator. I will only use it for personal use.

Thanks for making this fine tool Gozzy. Due to your efforts, I have a lovely map so that my RPG parties are able to crawl through filthy ghoul caves under the City of Arkham Massachusetts in style. Much appreciated.

You're awesome for making this tool. You're even more awesome for making it available for anonymous folk like me. :D

Comment Posted Sep 23, 2016 at 20:47 by Anonymous Folk

Your cave generator is the bestest---very realistic caves. I do have a wish though: could you include an option to just output an outline, with white floor and white rock? It shouldn't be too much trouble. This way I could tweak the cave however I wanted, overlay a hex grid, ice walls, etc.

Comment Posted Oct 6, 2016 at 22:03 by Freederick

This is a really wonderful tool! Such simple criteria and yet it really does a great job! I got just what I was looking for in only a few minutes. What a lifesaver for dms. Thank you so much for this!!
